How to Sell Your Car UK: Private vs Part-Ex

Selling a car in the UK used to mean one thing: a classified advert and a string of strangers on your driveway. These days you have far more options — private sale, part-exchange at a dealer, instant online buyers, car-buying services and auctions — and the right choice can mean thousands of pounds of difference. This guide walks through every method, the paperwork you must get right, and the scams to watch out for, so you can sell with confidence and get a fair price. This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Prices mentioned are illustrative and move with the market — always get fresh valuations before you commit. Step one: know what your car is worth Before you choose how to sell, find out what your car is actually worth. Free valuation tools from Auto Trader, Parkers and What Car? will give you a realistic range based on the car's age, mileage, condition, service history and specification. Be honest about the condition — a 'mint' valuation for a car with kerbed alloys, a patchy service history and 90,000 miles will only disappoint you later. Check live adverts for similar cars too: what are dealers and private sellers actually asking for the same model, age and mileage? Asking prices are not selling prices, but they show you the ceiling. Remember that part-exchange and instant-buyer offers will always come in below a private sale — that gap is the convenience premium you pay for a quick, hassle-free deal. Step two: prepare the car properly However you sell, presentation pays. A proper clean inside and out — or a £20 to £40 valet — routinely adds more to the perceived value than it costs. Fix the cheap stuff: blown bulbs, worn wiper blades, a missing parcel shelf or a scuffed wheel centre cap all whisper 'neglected' to a buyer. Gather the paperwork: V5C logbook, service history (stamps or printouts), both keys, the owner's manual and any receipts for recent work. A full service history is one of the strongest value-boosters there is. Be upfront about faults. Hiding a known problem might get you a quick sale, but a private buyer who discovers it afterwards can unwind the deal — and a dealer will simply knock the repair cost off your offer at handover. Option 1: selling privately — the highest price, the most effort Listing on Auto Trader, Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree typically nets you the most money, because there is no middleman taking a cut. A well-presented popular car can fetch 10 to 20 percent more privately than as a part-exchange. The downsides are real, though. You will deal with timewasters, lowball offers and no-shows. You need to handle viewings and test drives safely: meet in daylight, ideally with someone else at home, check the buyer's driving licence before any test drive, and never let them drive off alone with your keys. Take clear photos in good light, write an honest description with the full specification, service history and any flaws, and price it just above what you will accept to leave room for negotiation. For payment, a bank transfer completed while the buyer is with you — confirmed in your own banking app, not on their phone screen — is the safest option. Be wary of overpayment scams ('I've sent too much, please refund the difference'), PayPal for large sums, and anyone who wants the car shipped abroad sight unseen. Option 2: part-exchange at a dealer — the easiest deal If you are buying another car from a dealer, part-exchanging your old one is by far the simplest route: they value it, knock the figure off the new car's price, and handle all the paperwork. You drive in with one car and out with another. The convenience costs you money. Part-exchange valuations are routinely the lowest of all the options — the dealer needs a margin to prepare and resell your car, or to cover auction fees if they move it on. That said, the gap narrows on older, high-mileage or slightly scruffy cars, where a private buyer would haggle hard anyway. Always negotiate the new car's price and your car's value as two separate numbers; dealers sometimes inflate one to hide a poor figure on the other. And get an independent valuation first, so you know whether their offer is fair. Option 3: online car-buying services — fast money, fair-ish prices Services like WeBuyAnyCar, Motorway, Carwow and Cazoo's buying arm will give you an online valuation in minutes and collect the car from your door, often within days. Motorway and Carwow work slightly differently: dealers bid against each other in an online auction, which can push the price above a fixed-quote buyer. These services sit between private sale and part-exchange on price — typically better than a dealer's trade-in bid, but below what a patient private sale achieves. Read the small print: the online quote assumes the car matches your description, and the collection agent will inspect it and can reduce the offer for every scratch, dent or missing service stamp. Some services also charge an administration fee. Be brutally honest in the online condition report and you will avoid an awkward renegotiation on your driveway. Option 4: auctions — best for unusual or older cars Traditional car auctions (BCA, Manheim and local salerooms) suit cars that are hard to value — classics, modified cars, very high-mileage workhorses. You set a reserve, the hammer falls, and the car is gone the same day. Fees apply to the seller, and there is no guarantee of reaching your reserve, but for the right car an auction can outperform every other channel. The paperwork you must get right Whichever method you choose, the admin is non-negotiable. When you sell, fill in the relevant section of the V5C logbook with the buyer's details and send it to the DVLA — or notify the sale online at GOV.UK, which is quicker and gives you instant confirmation. Do NOT just hand over the whole V5C; the new keeper section goes to the buyer and the rest comes to you to forward. Until the DVLA records the change, you remain liable for fines and penalties on the car. Vehicle tax does not transfer with the car. As the seller, you will automatically get a refund for any full months of tax remaining once the DVLA is notified — and the buyer must tax the car themselves before driving it away. Cancel or transfer your insurance once the sale is complete, and consider a SORN declaration only if you are keeping an untaxed car off the road. Give the buyer a proper receipt: date, both names and addresses, the car's registration, make, model, mileage, price and the words 'sold as seen' for a private sale (which limits — but does not eliminate — your liability). Keep a copy. Scams and red flags Most private sales go smoothly, but know the classics: the overpayment/refund scam, fake bank-transfer screenshots, buyers who 'can't view' but send a courier with a cheque, and curbstoners posing as private sellers while flipping multiple cars. Never release the car until funds are cleared in your account, never accept payment plans from strangers, and trust your instincts — if a deal feels wrong, walk away. Timing and tactics Convertibles sell better in spring, 4x4s in autumn, and the market is generally quietest in December and busiest in March and September around the plate changes. Selling with a fresh MOT and a recent service removes buyers' two biggest objections. And whatever method you choose, get at least two or three valuations or offers before deciding — the spread between the highest and lowest bid for the same car can be genuinely shocking. The bottom line There is no single 'best' way to sell a car — only the best way for your priorities. Want maximum money and do not mind the hassle? Sell privately. Buying another car and value simplicity? Part-exchange. Need it gone this week with minimal drama? An online buyer. Know your car's worth, prepare it properly, nail the paperwork, and you will come out of the deal with a fair price and no regrets.
