UK MOT Test: What's Checked & How to Pass

Every year, millions of UK drivers put their cars through the MOT test — and every year, plenty of them fail for things that could have been spotted on the driveway. Whether you are a first-time car owner or just want to stop dreading the annual appointment, this guide explains what the MOT actually checks, what it costs, what happens if you fail, and how to give your car the best chance of passing first time. This is general information about the UK testing system, not legal advice. Rules can change, so always check the current guidance on GOV.UK if you are unsure about your own situation. What is an MOT, and when does your car need one? The MOT is an annual test of vehicle safety, roadworthiness and exhaust emissions, required by law for most vehicles over three years old that are used on public roads in Great Britain. In Northern Ireland the test is run by the DVA rather than private garages, but the principle is the same. You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT, and your insurance may be invalidated too — so it is not something to let slide. The first MOT is due on the third anniversary of the car's registration, and then every twelve months after that. You can take the test up to a month before it expires and keep the same renewal date — so if your MOT runs out on 30 April, you can test any time after 31 March and the new certificate still runs to 30 April the following year. Book the reminder service on GOV.UK and you will get a text or email before it lapses. A common misunderstanding: the MOT is not a service. It checks that your car meets minimum legal standards on the day of the test. It does not check the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox internals, and a pass certificate says nothing about how reliable the car will be over the next twelve months. You still need regular servicing. What the test actually checks The test is thorough but predictable — the tester works through a set list of items. The main areas are: Lights and signalling: headlights, sidelights, brake lights, indicators, hazard lights, fog lights, number-plate lights and reflectors. All must work, be the right colour and aim correctly. Lighting faults are consistently among the most common reasons for failure — and the easiest to fix at home. Steering and suspension: the steering must operate smoothly with no excessive play, and suspension components, springs, shock absorbers and wheel bearings are checked for wear, damage and leaks. Brakes: brake performance is measured on a rolling road or with a decelerometer. Pads, discs, hoses, pipes and the handbrake are all inspected. Corroded brake pipes are a classic failure point on older cars. Tyres and wheels: tyres must have at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round, with no cuts, bulges or exposed cords. Wheels must be secure and undamaged. Seatbelts: every belt fitted must be present, undamaged and working, including the buckles and anchorages. Bodywork and structure: the tester looks for excessive corrosion or damage, particularly in structural areas and within 30cm of safety-related components like seatbelt mountings and suspension pick-up points. Exhaust and emissions: the exhaust system must be secure and leak-free, and emissions are measured against limits for the car's age and fuel type. Diesels get a smoke test; petrols and newer diesels face stricter limits. Windscreen, mirrors and wipers: the driver's view of the road must not be obstructed. Chips or cracks in the swept area of the windscreen can fail the car, as can worn wiper blades, a broken mirror or an empty washer bottle. Horn, fuel system and general items: the horn must work, the fuel cap must seal, and doors, bonnet and boot must open, close and latch securely. The three possible results Since the 2018 rule changes, every defect found is graded. A pass means your car met the standards, though you may still get advisories — things that are worn but not yet bad enough to fail, which you should monitor or fix soon. A fail lists defects as either major or dangerous. A major defect means the car fails but you may still drive it away if your old MOT is still valid. A dangerous defect means the car must not be driven until it is repaired — driving it could land you with a fine and points, and your insurer would take a dim view. How much does an MOT cost? The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) sets a maximum fee: currently £54.85 for a standard car (Class 4). No garage can legally charge you more than that for the test itself — but many charge less, typically somewhere in the £35 to £50 range, and some offer the test cheaply as a loss-leader alongside a service. If a garage quotes expensive 'fail' repairs, remember you are entitled to a second opinion — the test itself should always be honest, but repair quotes vary enormously. What happens if you fail? First, do not panic — a significant share of cars fail their first attempt in any given year, and most failures are for minor, fixable items. If the car fails, you will get a refusal notice (VT30) listing every defect. You can have the car repaired anywhere you like; you are not obliged to use the testing garage. For the retest, the rules are generous: if you leave the car at the test station for repair and it is retested within 10 working days, the partial retest is free. If you take it away and bring it back within 10 working days, you can be charged a reduced fee (capped at half the full test price). After 10 working days, it is a full-price test again. If your car failed with a dangerous defect, you cannot legally drive it away — it will need to be repaired on site or recovered by trailer. How to pass first time: a pre-MOT checklist A surprising number of failures are for things you can check in ten minutes on your driveway the weekend before the test: Walk around the car and check every light — headlights (dipped and main beam), sidelights, indicators front and rear, brake lights (ask someone to watch, or reverse up to a wall at night), hazards, fog lights and the number-plate light. Replace any blown bulbs; they cost a few pounds. Check your tyres: 1.6mm is the legal minimum, but anything under 3mm is worth replacing soon anyway. Look for cuts, bulges and uneven wear. Top up the washer fluid, check the wipers clear the screen cleanly, and make sure the horn works. Clean the number plates so they are clearly readable, and check the mirrors are intact and adjustable. Look at the dashboard for warning lights. An illuminated engine management light, ABS light or airbag light is an automatic fail — get it diagnosed before the test, not after. Finally, make sure the car is reasonably clean and the boot is not piled with junk; testers can refuse to test a car that is excessively dirty or cluttered. Common failure reasons — and what they cost to fix Year after year, the top failure categories are lighting and signalling, suspension, brakes, tyres and driver visibility (wipers, washers, windscreen). The good news is that most of these are cheap: bulbs, wiper blades and washer fluid are DIY jobs costing a few pounds. Tyres start at around £50 to £70 fitted for a small car at a budget fitter. Brake pads and discs are pricier — a few hundred pounds at a garage — and suspension or corrosion work can run higher, which is why catching advisories early matters. Can you drive without an MOT? Only in very limited circumstances: you may drive to a pre-booked MOT appointment or to a place of repair after a failure, and even then the car must still be roadworthy. Driving anywhere else without a valid MOT risks a £1,000 fine, and if you are involved in a crash, your insurer can refuse to pay out. There is no grace period — the day it expires, you need a new one. Useful free tools The GOV.UK MOT history checker lets you look up any car's past MOT results using its registration number — every pass, fail, advisory and recorded mileage. It is invaluable when buying a used car: recurring advisories for corrosion or suspension wear tell you what is coming. Pair it with a paid HPI-style check for finance, write-off and theft markers, and you have done most of your homework before you even see the car. The bottom line The MOT is not out to get you — it is a minimum safety standard, and most well-maintained cars sail through. Do the ten-minute driveway check, fix the cheap stuff before the appointment, take advisories seriously, and the annual test becomes a routine formality rather than a source of dread — and a nasty bill you could have avoided.
