EVs Take Record August Share as UK Market Grows

The UK new car market grew for a ninth consecutive month in August 2026, with registrations up 13.7% year on year to 94,236, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). It was the best August performance since the introduction of the twice-yearly number plate change. Electric cars were the standout performers. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) rose 27.7% to 28,063 registrations, taking a 29.8% market share - the second-highest monthly share of the year so far. The SMMT noted that August typically produces a seasonal spike in electric share because overall sales volumes are lower, a pattern seen every August since 2023. Plug-in hybrids posted the strongest growth of any powertrain, up 39.8% to 13,707 cars and a 14.5% share of the market. Conventional self-charging hybrids (HEVs) climbed 26.3% to 11,940, giving them a 12.7% share. Petrol was the only major fuel type to fall, down 3.5% to 36,048, although it still accounts for 38.3% of new registrations. Diesel edged up 4.0% to 4,478. Private buyers drove much of the growth, with private registrations up 19.0% to 38,460, while fleet registrations rose 10.1% to 53,934. In the model charts, the Ford Puma was August's best-selling car overall with 2,795 registrations, ahead of the Jaecoo 7 on 2,022 and the MG HS on 1,785, according to figures reported by Carwow. Among electric cars, the Tesla Model 3 topped the table with 1,296 registrations, taking the crown from the Renault 5, which slipped to eighth place with 736. The Tesla Model Y followed with 884 registrations. Over the first eight months of 2026, battery electric cars account for 25.6% of all new registrations - a record, but still short of the Government's 33% headline target for 2026 under the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate. The SMMT said manufacturers are doing everything they can to help drivers switch, but argued that targets must be grounded in the reality of consumer demand, and welcomed the Government's decision to review the mandate. The real test now is September, traditionally one of the two biggest sales months of the year thanks to the new 76-plate. Analysts say it will reveal whether August's electric momentum was a seasonal quirk or the start of a sustained push towards the mandate targets. What it means for UK drivers: with more than 170 zero-emission models now on sale and manufacturers offering incentives to hit their targets, choice and deals on electric cars are better than ever. Higher fuel costs are also nudging more buyers towards electric, according to The Times. But the SMMT cautions that August's figures may flatter the picture - September's numbers will be the ones to watch.
